Monumental Cemetary

The Monumental Cemetary is located about 300 metres southeast of the town. It is delimited by a stone wall on which a solar clock (sundial) can be admired and a majestic entrance portal.
The construction works began in 1889 and finished in 1896. Originally, the cemetary covered an area of 18,700 sqm, but over time the cemetary increased significantly its dimensions. The Monumental Cemetary, the patrician chapels, the mausoleums, the bourgeois chapels, the small monuments for simple burials are all enclosed inside the two initial squares, whose artworks were created and carved between 1890 and 1940.
The most important chapels rise along the external wall, while the more simple resting places side the avenues.

Inside the cemetary it is possible to admire the sculptures and bas-reliefs of Giuliano, Gibilisco Storaci, the cement artworks of Moschetti, the friezes and precious engravings of Garofalo, Buccheri, Calleri, Greco and other first class local stone cutters.
The numerous patrician Art Nouveau style chapels of the Musso Messina di Bibbia, Messina Mazzarella, and Judica families bear witness to the artistic taste of the time as well as to the importance of the sepulchral cult.
